INTRODUCTION

The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), University of Tartu was founded 20 years ago. The idea was to join all the relevant activities of the University and then independent laboratories of the Academy of Science. Within these two decades the IMCB has established itself as a leading Estonian centre for research and teaching in rapidly developing fields: fundamental and applied studies in molecular biology, cancer research, human genetics, studies of complex genetic disease.

Currently, we employ 130 persons, most of them researchers, teachers and professors. The institute offers degrees in molecular and cell biology, gene technology and environmental technology. We have nearly 80 PhD and 70 Master Students. In years 1990-2009 the number of awarded PhD degrees was 98 and MSc degrees 314. In the context of a small country these numbers are big indeed. Annually we publish around 90 scientific papers in recognized international peer-reviewed journals.

The main strength of the Institute is a real and fully functioning integration between teaching, internationally recognised high-level research and technological development and innovation. It is especially important to underline the fact that IMBC has since its very beginning performed teaching at all three academic levels – bachelor, M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies. This creates a constant flow of new talented young people, who want and are able to become good scientists. For the second period (2005-2008 and 2009-2015) the Institute hosts Estonian Graduate School in Biomedicine and Biotechnology which includes international partners.

Of course, research-based teaching is not solely about preparing future scientists. Many biotech SME-s have been grown out from the IMBC. The researchers and teachers of the IMBC take actively part in designing, governing and managing strategic issues of research and society both nationally and internationally.

In the years 2001-2007 the IMCB led the consortium, which formed Estonian National Centre of Excellence for Gene and Environmental Technologies. Currently the Institute participates in the work of two Estonian Centres of Excellence.

Every year our scientists open new strategically important directions of research and are successful in ensuring their development in the conditions of tight international competition. Competition, of course, comes together with collaboration and I think we have mostly found good balance between the two. And last but not least – the age composition of the people working for the IMBC is quite optimal, which in turn allows smooth turnover of generations and guarantees a sustainable future for this Institute.
