DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
The research in our department is focused on two different subjects: 1. Mechanism of mitochondrial DNA metabolism in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Our goal is to understand how different strands are initiated during mitochondrial DNA replication. We are interested in the mechanistic roles of different replication proteins and are also trying to find out how the DNA metabolic processes in mitochondria are regulated and coordinated with the cell cycle. We are utilizing the variety of yeast genetics tools, purified proteins, and in vivo approaches to address these questions. During the last couple of years we have analysed the role of different replication factors in mitochondrial DNA metabolism using powerful 2D gel methods. (Head of the group Dr. Juhan Sedman) 2. Kinetic analysis of cellulolytic enzymes of Trichoderma reesei The research efforts of this group are targeted at the understanding of the enzymology of proteins responsible for degradation the most abundant biopolymer in the biosphere. (Head of the group Dr. Priit Väljamäe)
